Building and Safety

The San Dimas Building and Safety Division is responsible for administering and enforcing the Uniform Building Codes and the construction section of the San Dimas Municipal Code to ensure minimum standards to protect life and property.

The main functions of the Building and Safety Division is perform plan checks, inspections, maintain records and disaster preparedness.

Plan Checking

Simply put, plans are required to provide an agreed upon design that meets the minimum standards of the City. All modifications or corrections are done on paper avoiding misunderstandings and costly revisions in the field. Plans typically consist of:

  1. Plot plan showing the location of the proposed construction.
  2. Foundation plan indicating slab and footing details as well as framing attachments.
  3. Framing plan indicating all framing details, dimensions, insulation, wall coverings, roofing etc.
  4. Elevations showing how the proposed construction will look from the outside.
  5. Show compliance with minimum energy efficiency standards.
  6. Basic electrical, heating and air, and plumbing layouts.

Plans are checked for compliance with the latest adopted Uniform Codes.

Inspections

The construction project is inspected at various stages to verify compliance with the approved plans and the construction standards in the Uniform Codes. The minimum inspections consist of: Foundation, Framing, Rough Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Insulation, Drywall, Exterior Lath, Roof Sheathing and Final.

Maintain Records

All permits are filmed, (microfiche), and added to the address file for the project. Microfiche documents are available for viewing at City Hall and for a fee can be copied.

Disaster Preparedness

The Building and Safety Division keeps up with the latest disaster training and is on call to perform inspections in case of disasters such as an earthquake.
